Meet the DPW

I am extremely proud and forever grateful to hold the position of Director of Public Works in the town that I grew up in. I and the Town of Hull are lucky to have such a great crew of dedicated, hard working and motivated individuals working for us.

The Department of Public Works has gotten a lot of good feedback, good input and positive comments lately so I just want to share some photos of the people that are making the town look so good.

We'll periodically post some pictures of the crew so that people can put some names to the faces that they see out there doing their thing.

Everyone that lives in town or simply drives through it always take note of the condition of our fields throughout town. Making our playing fields and parks look like they do is not an easy job, so I wanted to start with the people responsible for that.

Eric Ahlstedt (pictured on the right) has been with the DPW since 2015 and is our primary field and parks person in charge of making them all look as great as they do on a daily basis.

Michael Goodwin (pictured on the left) started with us earlier this year and jumped right onto the Parks crew and brought a great work ethic and understanding of field maintenance with him.

If you see either of them, feel free to say hi and thank them for all their hard work  :-)

Final Household Hazardous Waste Day

Final Household Hazardous Waste Day

The Final Household Hazardous Waste Day for this Spring will be held this coming Saturday at the Scituate Highway Department, 68 Captain Pierce Rd, Scituate.

Hull residents may attend this event to dispose of certain Household Hazardous Waste materials if they get an Authorization Form from the Hull DPW in advance. The Authorization Form will include a list of what is and what is not accepted, please read this information.

The event runs from 9am until 1pm.

If you already got an Authorization Form for the event last week in Hingham but were unable to attend, your Form is still valid for this weekends event.

The Town of Hull will be hosting one of these events on September 23rd, more information will be posted as it becomes available.

Storm Drains are for Surface Water Run-off ONLY

Please refrain from using the area storm drains and catch basins as disposal spots to get rid of unwanted liquids from your homes and report anyone else doing it.

On Sunday June 11th, a person was observed dumping a vehicle oil change pan into a catch basin on Samoset Ave at A Street.

Nothing, other than street run-off should ever enter the drainage system because it leads directly to the ocean or to other bodies of water. Dumping used motor oil into a storm drain or catch basin can harm or kill aquatic life and vegetation. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, used oil from a single oil change can pollute up to one million gallons of freshwater.

If you see this type of activity happening, please notify the Hull Police at (781) 925-1212.

 

REMINDER FOR TOMORROW'S HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE DAY

Just a Reminder -

If you got a pass from the DPW for the Household Hazardous Waste Day tomorrow, they will begin to take non-Hingham residents at 10am, the event ends at 1pm.

If you have multiple partly filled containers of similar materials, please combine them to save money but do not mix materials or liquids of different types.

Please read the flyer that was given out with your authorization form to see what is and what is not accepted at the event.

If for some reason, you cannot attend tomorrows event, the authorization form will also be accepted at the event in Scituate next Saturday, June 17th.

Construction Update - Nantasket Ave

Construction Update - Nantasket Ave

The road reconstruction work along Nantasket Ave between A Street and H Street continues. The crews from TL Edwards is doing great work and making significant progress.

The construction of the new sidewalks began this week and should be completed in the next few days. Once the sidewalks and clean-up work is done, they will begin the process of the final paving of the road.

Please note that the crew WILL BE WORKING TOMORROW (Saturday June 10th) on the sidewalks. There will be no heavy equipment and all of the work will be in the sidewalk area. For worker safety reasons, they may have to close a single lane on the east side of the Ave where they are working but there will not be the need to divert all of the traffic to Beach Ave like they have this past week.

Construction Update - Holbrook Ave Revetment Project

Construction Update - Holbrook Ave Revetment Project

For those that are not aware of this project, they are building a small revetment to reinforce and stabilize the area on the bluff below multiple homes on Holbrook Ave at the homeowners expense.

The project has received all of the necessary permits and the Town has granted a construction license to the homeowners to use the X Street opening and to traverse the beach to get to the bluff in the cove.

They are using stones that weigh between 8,000 pounds and 14,000 pounds to build the revetment. 

The contractor is making some operational adjustments to minimize the impacts on the Beach Ave homeowners.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 6/30.  There is no work permitted on weekends.
