Winter Time Reminder from the DPW

The Public Works Department works very hard to keep all of the streets and sidewalks in town safe for motorists and pedestrians alike. If for some reason, you encounter an area that is not cleared of snow enough for your liking, please call us and we will address it as quickly as possible.

We have a very dedicated staff as shown by the crew who worked countless hours on Christmas Eve as well as on Christmas Day this year but there are limits as to what can be done on a first attempt.

You can help by making sure that your cars are as far off the roadway as possible to give the plow trucks enough room to get by safely. All Hull residents should be aware of the mandatory parking ban, which is in effect until March 31, 2018. The ban includes no on-street parking between 1:30am and 7:00am on Nantasket Ave, Atlantic Ave, Spring St and Main Street.

Also during this ban, for all other streets in town during inclement weather, parking will be allowed on the odd numbered side of each street, except in areas where such parking is always prohibited. This will provide for orderly snow removal/sanding/salting operations as well as free flow of traffic, especially emergency vehicles.

Failure to comply with the codes of the Town of Hull Chapter 155 Section 19, regarding
impeding snow removal will result in parking violation fines and/or towing of the offending vehicles at the owner’s expense.

PLEASE give the plow trucks the room they need to navigate through our streets, these trucks are 31-feet long, 10-feet wide and weigh over 38,000 pounds.

If you have any questions or concerns about the snow removal process, please do not hesitate to call the DPW at (781) 925-0900.

THANKSGIVING NIGHT BONFIRE STARTING AT 7PM

There have been different times posted on Facebook as to the start time of the bonfire. Please be advised that the bonfire will be lit at around 7PM on Thanksgiving night.

Have a great turkey lunch or dinner, dress warm and head to the HRA lot and enjoy this great Hull tradition. It should be the biggest bonfire in memory.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving with your family and friends and stay safe :-)

Localized Street Flooding

Last nights high winds and the ongoing periods of heavy rain have taken a lot of leaves off the trees. Many of the leaves have made their way onto the grates of the area catch basins and caused some localized street flooding in low-lying areas of town.

The entire Public Works staff is out on the roads doing their best to clear any obstructions from the basins so that the water in the streets will subside.

Please be patient as we are doing the best we can to alleviate the situation.

Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.

More Vandalism Means More Work by the DPW

The Hull High School Junior Class built and installed a free library box at the Kenberma Playground a few months ago so that people could read a free book while watching kids play at the playground.

Within the first few days, the box was damaged by vandals and repaired by the DPW.

This week, the DPW Parks crew took the box back to the DPW garage and made it a little stronger, changed the way that the box opens so it is more user friendly (and safer to open), secured the roof and made it more weather resistant by adding a shingled roof to it.
Hopefully this box will last since the Juniors did such a nice thing in building it originally.

On another note, one of the BRAND NEW, FRESHLY BUILT benches at the playground was vandalized again! Someone thought it would be a good idea to draw rude pictures on it. This was removed right away because the images were certainly not family or child friendly.
There was also a significant amount of names and writing done on the new play structure as well!

If you see anything that looks out of the ordinary, please contact the Hull Police right away and help us preserve and maintain the assets that the town works so hard to provide...

DPW Honors Breast Cancer Awareness Month

It seems that everyone has a family member or knows someone that has been affected by Breast Cancer.
To honor those people, the DPW will be wearing their new pink shirts with the Breast Cancer Awareness Ribbon wrapped around the Town logo for the month of October.
Our own Administrative Assistant Mary Ellen is a survivor, we wish her and everyone else the best of luck and continued health. <3

Bench Dedication Ceremony to Honor Fallen Marine

In honor of Corporal Christopher J. Orlando, USMC, a Memorial Bench Dedication Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 7 at Hull Shore Drive Extension in Hull, Mass.

A competitive surfer and former South Shore Surf Camp Counselor and Instructor, the location was chosen as a symbol of the countless hours Orlando spent on the waters at Nantasket Beach.

Corporal Orlando, a flight crew chief, and 11 other Marines were killed on January 14, 2016 when two military helicopters crashed off the Hawaiian island of Oahu during a nighttime training flight. Corporal Orlando, of Hingham, was 23.

At the time of his passing, Corporal Orlando was assigned to Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 463, Marine Aircraft Group 24, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, which was stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.

During his service, Corporal Orlando was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

In addition to many members and friends of this Gold Star Family, several Federal, State, and Local Officials will be in attendance. The public is welcome to attend and show their support for a young man who served his country with honor, and like those that have gone before him, his sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Freedom is never free, it comes with a price.

DPW Storm Prep for Hurricane Jose

Although it is unclear what exactly the Town of Hull will receive for weather from Hurricane Jose, we are taking steps to minimize its impact, whatever it may be.

For our part, the DPW is in the process of removing beach stairs, closing dune openings, cleaning basins and readying our equipment for whatever issues we are forced to deal with. We apologize for any inconvenience these measures may cause but we are doing so in the best interest of the town and its residents along the shoreline.

For more precise weather and Town notifications, please check the Hull Emergency Management page.

New Sign for the Charlie Feist Field

The Hull DPW installed a new sign for the Charlie Feist Ballfield in Kenberma yesterday. The old sign was destroyed by kids, we're hoping that this new sign will be respected the way that Charlie was respected in our schools and in our community.

Nantasket Beach Clean-up

Nantasket Beach Clean-up

The recent wet weather, high tides and ocean surge have brought in a lot of trash, debris and seaweed, particularly in the upper alphabet section and in the Gunrock area.

A crew from the DPW is now walking the beach beginning at X Street working their way south and another crew is starting at A Street, working their way north until the beach is cleared of trash and debris that is able to be removed by hand.

Due to the volume of seaweed brought in by the tide cycles, it has the potential to become infested with insects and could pose a present or imminent threat to the health or safety of the general public. Because of this, the Board of Health has declared it a Health Emergency.

With that declaration, the Conservation Administrator issued a Wetlands Protection Act Emergency Certification allowing the Department of Public Works to bring a machine onto the beach to address the situation based on the Required Best Practices and Procedures as described in the Beach Management Plan.

Based on the BMP, we will be starting at the north end of Nantasket Beach this afternoon when the tide starts to drop and will be placing the seaweed back in the water so that it gets carried back out with the dropping tide.

This process may take a few tidal cycles because it is so thick but we are addressing the situation.

Thank you to Joyce Sullivan at the Board of Health and Chris Krahforst from the Conservation office for all their help with this situation.
