Winter Tips
With tomorrow marking the first calendar day of winter, the DPW wants to ask for your help in making this season a safe one.
Once the snow starts to fly, please do your part to help in the snow removal efforts if
possible by staying off the roads unless it’s an emergency, do not shovel snow
from your driveway or walkway into the streets, clear snow from the sidewalks
in front of your house, remove all portable items from the edge of the road
(basketball hoops, trash barrels, etc), and most of all, if you see a plow
truck, please give them the room they need to pass safely.
Please remember to check your vents to ensure that they are clear of snow build-up to avoid any possible carbon monoxide exposure. If you have elderly or disabled neighbors, please check on them to make sure that they are alright as well.

Basketball hoops and other items left along the roadside could be damaged and could cause damage to Town-owned plows or even injury to snow plow drivers, please make sure they are removed

Please Help to Keep Storm Drains Clear
With rain expected tonight starting in the early evening and lasting throughout the night, there is a chance of localized street flooding.
There are several spots in town that have repetitive street flooding issues whenever we get heavy rain events. Please do your part to help minimize street flooding by assisting the DPW by clearing leaves away from any storm drains in your neighborhood.
Our crews are out there everyday working to remove leaves and other obstructions that prevent rainwater and street run-off from entering the drainage system but with over 2,000 drains and a small crew, it's often difficult to get to all of them.
If you do experience any street flooding during or after a rain event, you can call the DPW and we will send someone out as quickly as possible to try to alleviate the issue. But please understand that almost all of the pipes that are connected to our drainage system in town discharge into the bay or to the ocean. Unfortunately, there are some times when the height of the tide interferes with the drainage system working properly and nothing can be done until the tide subsides.
Thank you in advance for your help, understanding and cooperation...

Emergency Management Agency
Situational Awareness Statement
Situational Awareness Statement
SUBJECT: Localized Flash Flooding and Gusty Winds Possible Today/Tomorrow
Situation
A cold front passing
through the region tonight, together with Tropical Storm Michael passing south
of Nantucket on Friday, will bring potentially heavy rainfall and gusty winds
to the New England region today and tomorrow. Pockets of heavy rain are
possible this afternoon and evening with the primary focus shifting into far
southeast New England late tonight and Friday.
Widespread rainfall
totals of 1 to 2 inches are forecast with locally higher amounts of 3-6 inches
possible, with the greatest risk falling across far southeast New England.
Areas that receive heavier rainfall amounts are at risk of localized flash
flooding. Northerly wind gusts of 35 to 50 mph are possible late tonight into
Friday across far southeast New England with the greatest risk across the Cape
and Islands.
While the National
Weather Service has high confidence that periods of heavy rain will occur,
especially across far southeast New England, it is still uncertain if heavy
rain will persist long enough across the interior to result in localized flash
flooding, or if areas of 3-6 inch rainfall will impact southeast New England or
remain just offshore, sparing the region of potential flooding.
Impacts:
Pockets of heavy rain
may result in localized flash flooding, with the highest risk across far
southeastern New England.
Northerly wind gusts
of up to 50 MPH across far southeastern New England on Friday may result in
minor tree damage and isolated power outages.

MA DEP Recycling Education Initiative
The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection
(MassDEP) announced a groundbreaking, statewide recycling education initiative
to reduce contamination in recycling by asking residents to “do their part and
recycle smart.”
The cornerstone of this initiative is their new website
called RecycleSmartMA.org that features
the “SmartRecycling Guide.”
The Guide identifies the four categories of materials
that every materials recovery facility (MRF) across the state accepts:
·
Mixed paper and cardboard
·
Metal food and beverage cans
·
Glass bottles and jars
·
Plastic bottles, jars, jugs, and tubs
The guide also identifies the top five contaminants that
MRF's do not want in recycling loads and explains that these materials should
be managed in other ways.
The top five contaminants are:
·
Bagged recyclables and bagged garbage
·
Loose plastic bags/plastic wrap
·
Food and liquids
·
Clothing or linens
·
“Tanglers” - hoses, wires, chains, strings of
lights, etc.
The website includes the “Recyclopedia” search tool,
where residents can search for hundreds of items (from paper bags to pizza
boxes) to find out how to properly manage them.
There is also a video
showing the recycling sorting process inside a MRF and answers to frequently
asked questions about why and how to recycle smart. But, the most
important element of this initiative is your participation and partnership in
helping to get the word out about smart recycling.
